Professor Özge Can

Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer

Biography

Prof. Dr. Özge Can has received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the Ege University, Izmir, Turkey in 2001. He has completed his master’s studies at the Izmir Institute of Technology and worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He then went to United States in 2004 to obtain his Ph.D. and attended Fenn College of Engineering at the Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, where he has received doctoral dissertation research expense award. He worked as a research and teaching assistant during his doctoral studies within the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. He then worked at the University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware, USA as NIH postdoctoral fellow until 2010. The same year he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the Acibadem University, Istanbul, Turkey. He is a member of TauBetaPi (American National Engineering Honor Society), and founder member of the Turkish Proteomics Association, where he has acted as Vice President between 2011 and 2014. Prof. Dr. Can acted as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Vice President of The Health Policies Research and Application Center at the Acibadem University between 2015-2021. Dr. Can became Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry in 2016 and full professor of Medical Engineering in 2021. Prof. Dr. Can is currently the Head of the Department of Medical Engineering at Acibadem University. Dr. Can is co-founder and manager of Gigabiomol Biotechnology Ltd. and co-founder of Bio-T Biotechnology Solutions and Production Inc.

Dr. Eylül Ece İşlek Camadan

Biography

Dr. Eylül Ece İşlek Camadan holds a BSc degree from Department of Genetics and Bioengineering, Yeditepe University. She received both her MSc. and PhD. degrees from Department of Medical Biology, Kocaeli University. Her doctoral studies were focused on the investigation of changes at mRNA and protein levels as a result of neuronal differentiation of neuroblastoma cells used in the modeling of Parkinson’s disease. She is currently responsible for the management of all scientific projects of Bio-T Biotechnology Solutions and Production Inc.

Berfin Çalkap

Biography

Berfin Çalkap has received her BS degree in Medical Engineering from Acıbadem University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2022. Simultaneously, she started her double major degree in Molecular Biology and Genetic in Acibadem University, Istanbul. During her BS degree, she has worked as a researcher in TUBITAK Star Project. After receiving BS degree, she started working as Operations Engineer at Bio-T Biotechnology Solutions and Production Inc. as of October 2022.

Sevi Kocagöz Castelli, Ph.D.

R&D Manager

Biography

Sevi Kocagöz Castelli, Ph.D. completed her BS degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, IL, USA. During her studies at IIT, she conducted undergraduate research on biomaterials and tissue engineering applications. She worked with Dr. Eric Brey and his grad students in evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of degradable porous hydrogels for vascularized tissue formation (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0060728). After graduating from IIT, she started her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, USA in 2011. During her time at Drexel University, she conducted research with Dr. Steve Kurtz at the Implant Research Core (IRC, http://www.biomed.drexel.edu/implantcenter/ ). During her PhD research at the IRC, Dr. Kocagöz conducted research on total joint replacement implant failure modes, materials and designs. She completed her dissertation “Investigation of Modular Taper Material and Design Factors That Affect Mechanically Assisted Crevice Corrosion at the Femoral Head Stem Junctions in Total Hip Arthroplasties” in 2021 (http://www.biomed.drexel.edu/implantcenter/CV-Dissertations-Thesis/kocagoz-thesis.pdf) .

Prior to completing her dissertation, she started working at 3D Systems, Inc. in 2016 as a materials and process engineer for photopolymer and thermoplastic 3D printing technologies. She continued working at 3D Systems as a materials and process engineer in the plastics R&D group until the end of 2022 and additionally became the Print Process Platform Manager for the Selective Laser Sintering printer platforms during her last year.

In December 2022 she obtained the online certification offered by MIT Professional Education’s Applied Data Science Program: Leveraging AI for Effective Decision-Making. She is currently pursuing Industrial Ecology at Leiden University in the Netherlands. With these latest pursuits, she hopes to use data science and machine learning techniques towards material development (material informatics) and implement systems level analysis of materials lifecycle.

Professor Tanıl Kocagöz

Biography

Tanil Kocagoz, M.D., Ph.D. studied in junior high school, Izmir Saint Joseph where he learned speaking French and in senior high school, Istanbul American Robert College where the curriculum was held in English. He received “Michael Hamilton Best Science Student Award” at graduation. Prof. Kocagöz graduated from Hacettepe University, School of Medicine, Ankara, in 1985. He worked as a director of a health center in Izmit for two and a half years as his conscription where he received a “Letter of Appreciation” from the Governer of Kocaeli for his important contributions to public health. Between 1988 and 1993 he completed Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases residency program at Medical Microbiology Department of Hacettepe University Medical School, Ankara, Turkey, where he later became associate professor. Between 1992 and 1994 he worked as a researcher at University of California San Francisco, Microbial Pathogenesis Unit where he took part in cloning and sequencing of penicillin binding protein 2 (PBP2) of Staphylococcus aureus and identified mutations leading to fluoroquinolone resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. After his return to Turkey he completed the Ph.D. program in biochemistry at the Medical Biochemistry Department of Hacettepe University. Development of new antimicrobials and rapid diagnostic tools for infectious diseases became his main areas of research. He moved to Istanbul in 2000 and dedicated himself to turn his inventions into products that will improve human health. For this purpose he took part in the foundation of R&D companies and concentrated his efforts for building a bridge between universities and industry in biotechnology. In 2004, he received the degree of Professor at Yeditepe University where he worked as the head of the Department of Medical Microbiology for four years. Since 2008 he is working in Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Istanbul, Turkey. He is head of the departments of Medical Microbiology and Medical Biotechnology. He developed several original patented products in the area of diagnostic microbiology. “Bacit A” which lowers the time required for the diagnosis of Group A Beta Hemolytic Streptococci from two to one day, “Quicolor”, a medium that enables antibiotic susceptibility testing in 4 to 6 hours instead of 24 hours,  “Observable Real Time Electrophoresis –ORTE-”, “Decomics”, a decontamination and concentration method that eliminates the need for centrifugation and “TK Culture System”, rapid culture system for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, “MyMagiCon” for concentration of microorganisms and macromolecules in biological fluids, can be counted among these. In 2010, ORTE (Observable Real Time Electrophoresis) received the award of “Akin Cakmakci” presented by Turkish Technology Development Fund (TTGV). TK is a rapid culture system for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, which was supported by Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), received “Eurowards Turkey” entrepreneurship award. Prof. Kocagöz has more than sixty scientific papers published in international journals and several poster awards. In 2011, Istanbul Physicians Association, “Medical Service Award” for his important contributions to the diagnostic methods of tuberculosis that can be used in resource-limited settings.

Ece Aksoy

Biography

Ece Aksoy studied Genetics and Bioengineering in Yeditepe University, Istanbul in 2017. As soon as she graduated, she started working as inhaler R&D assistant specialist in inhaler R&D department of Arven Pharmeceuticals for one and a half year. Simultaneously, she started her master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology in Acibadem University, Istanbul. After receiving M.Sc. degree, she started working as R&D specialist in Bio-T Biotechnology Solutions and Production Inc in 2021.

Tuba Polat

Research Scientist

Biography

Tuba Polat has received her BS degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2017. She has completed her master’s studies at the Acibadem University, Department of Medical Biotechnology,  Istanbul, Turkey in 2021. During her master’s degree, she has worked as a researcher in TUBITAK 1001 Project on antimicrobial peptides and completed her thesis on this subject. After receiving M.Sc. degree, she started working as Responsible Manager at Bio-T Biotechnology Solutions and Production Inc. as of January 2021.
